Frequently Asked Questions! Preguntas Comunes!
What is Quinteto Latino?
We are a woodwind quintet that focuses on classical music from Latin America. We weave together languages, cultures and music in an attempt to create an artistic experience that is personally meaningful to our audiences and to ourselves.
What do you mean by classical music from Latin America?
We play art music written by composers who identify themselves as being of Latin origin, regardless of where they currently live. While these composers were trained in the European 'classical' tradition, a lot of their music is strongly influenced by the folk music and cultural traditions of their Latin American heritage.
What is a wind quintet?
A group of five musicians who all use their breath (wind) to create sound on their instruments. It has been a common, traditional ensemble in Western classical music for more than 200 years. The instrumentation consists of flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon.
Why do you play music only by Latin American composers?
Our founder, Armando Castellano, had played and studied classical music his whole life but rarely had a chance to perform music he considered culturally relevant to him. There is a tremendously rich tradition of Latin American composers that we feel deserves more attention in the classical music world. We also love bringing this music to people who may think classical music has nothing to offer them - we're convinced that classical music is for everyone.
Will I understand your music?
All of the music we play is rooted in the traditions of Latin America - some pieces even feature immediately recognizable folk tunes. Even if you're not accustomed to sitting down and listening to music in a formal concert setting, the rhythms, styles and harmonies of our music will feel familiar. We also do a lot of explaining as appropriate. If you tend to think classical music is stuffy, we'd like to think we'll prove you wrong!
What kind of performances do you play?
We've performed educational programs in schools, family concerts in museums, formal recitals in concert halls, and background music at all sorts of parties and receptions. We always adjust our programs to be appropriate for the audience and the setting.
Why do you perform for kids so much?
All of us are very thankful for having music in our lives, and we believe everyone should have the same opportunity. We owe a great deal to inspirational teachers and creative experiences early in our youth, and we want to return that gift to the next generation.
How much does Quinteto Latino cost?
While we have a set fee for performances contracted through Young Audiences of Northern California, other events can be negotiated individually. We have performed benefits for causes we believe in, and we are deeply interested in outreach to communities not traditionally served with the arts. Contact us and let's talk.
